Same day booking for tip has arrived

It’s the news Isle of Wight residents have been waiting for — same-day tip bookings have launched!

From today (Friday 13th October 2023), people will have the option of a same-day booking at either Lynnbottom or Afton Marsh Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC).

Residents can book one same-day visit per day, up to two hours beforehand with the ability to amend or cancel their booking up to an hour before their visit.

Natasha Dix, the Isle of Wight Council's service director for waste, environment and planning, said: “You've asked, and we've listened.

“You will still be able to book in advance, but this extra change gives you the option of booking on the same day if you prefer. This makes a more inclusive and flexible booking system that meets the needs of all our residents.”

More than 85 per cent of residents said they were happy with the HWRCs in this year's annual recycling and waste survey.

The majority of respondents were also either very satisfied or satisfied with the booking system.

The results did however show people were to keen to see the introduction of same-day bookings.

The requirement to book a slot ahead of visiting an HWRC began in May 2020 as a response to a gradual reopening of the HWRCs during the COVID pandemic. It has since been made permanent.

Natasha added: “The booking system has improved traffic management at the HWRCs, with health and safety benefits to the public and staff, as site access is now better managed.

“It has also improved traffic flows, particularly on the slip road leading to the Lynnbottom site. We listened to what residents told us in the annual survey and we responded.

"I hope that residents will enjoy the extra benefit of being able to make a same-day booking to the recycling centres.”

Slots are simple to book through the My Account service on the Isle of Wight Council website: www.iow.gov.uk/waste or by phone: (01983) 823777.

Arreton Parish Council meeting with a police presence

A date for your diary.

As you may know, the Parish Council normally meets on the second Monday of the month.  However in April, the second Monday falls on Easter Monday and we are not permitted to meet on public holidays.  We have therefore brought the meeting forward to April 3rd (the first Monday).  This will be in the Community Hall as usual.  The meeting will be preceded by the Annual Parish Meeting to which all residents are invited, starting at 7pm.  This is when the Chairman reviews the previous year and it is an opportunity for residents to raise questions or pass comments on how the PC is doing.  Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.

This will be followed by the regular monthly meeting but on this occasion, Insp. Gooding from the Hampshire and IW Police will be making a return visit to report on the effects of measures which he talked about in September.  Hopefully, this will be good news for the Island in general and the residents of Arreton Parish (especially Merstone) in particular.

Whilst I am here, the prohibition of meetings on public holidays will also affect our May meeting.  The second Monday has been declared a Bank Holiday in celebration of the King’s Coronation and as the first Monday is already a holiday, we have had to move to May 15th.
